When Sunbathers Fled Attack, Viral Image Depicts Rescuer Running ‘Full Speed’ To the Scene.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong resident of Bondi, describes the iconic shoreline as her back yard. On that particular weekend night, she, similar to other others in the area, noticed loud noises reverberating across the community.

“That was the initial assumption, but I thought it was still too bright and no one could see them,” Ching recounts. Exiting her residence, she witnessed people “flooding up Bondi Road”. The looks they wore made it clear trouble had occurred.

While standing on the road, talking to a pair who had rushed up the hill soaked, she noticed someone approaching behind her. It was a lifeguard, sprinting towards Bondi barefoot from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while carrying a medical device.

“I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I spotted this blur of blue,” she recalls. “He was just flying past. He was the only one heading in the direction that all the others was trying to get away from, carrying that big kit and without footwear … He’s running towards something that certainly every instinct would tell you to run in the other direction.

“Absolutely no pause, but just totally maximum effort sprinting.”

An Iconic Image of Heroism Amidst Crisis

The photo that Ching snapped of the lifeguard, later named as Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as a prime example of acts of valour in the wake of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, a fellow lifeguard, says that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, hurried from Tamarama beach to support the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to work with emergency personnel, police and ambulance crews caring for many the injured.

Local Reaction and Assistance

Doolan’s account was part of a broader narrative to emerge from the community, with the patrol base next to the site of the incident serving as a makeshift hospital. Accounts show that fellow lifeguards were also seen responding bravely, for instance entering the ocean to save people who were struggling.

After the events, statements of support were shared. One post expressed thanks for the individuals who exhibited that “goodness will always conquer evil”.

The group of lifeguards later shared a communication, saying they were “still trying to comprehend what occurred”.

“We are grateful all for your thoughtful sentiments and solidarity. We are deeply moved by the compassion for our team,” the organization commented. “Eventually, we will recount our experiences in the belief that it helps those impacted.”

Local Government Recognition

Waverley council, the administrative organization that oversees many full-time beach safety officers, remarked that the crew performed exceptionally from the instant the violence started right into late that nighttime.

“We have heard so many moving accounts, but the popular image of Jackson Doolan, running from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help save lives is incredible,” said a local official.

“Our lifeguards exhibit selflessness every day in maintaining the safety of our internationally renowned shores protected for surfers and swimmers, but what we witnessed on that evening should be commended.

“While we mourn and process the horror of this violent and horrific act of violence, I think it is important that we reflect on just how much light we have observed in the midst of such darkness.”
