As disorienting as it is to witness the chief executive attempt to overturn the established notion regarding democracy and substitute it with its polar opposite, there exists a significant segment within America who should not find it completely novel. That is those of us – among senior generations almost a majority – who were raised within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have watched over the years as politically conservative religious groups transformed the Christ we were raised with into the complete reverse of who we understood him to be. Fundamentally, they converted a persona of love into an icon of hate who approves exactly the harshness that he denounced in the Gospel; this change developed at a slower pace, over decades instead of months, yet it remains disturbing via comparable methods, a confusing personal impact for many of us.
A Damaging Christianity Establishes Itself
Hence I shall explain the Christ from my childhood, as conceptually Jesus is the center of any Christian faith, and because the fastest-growing cadre of Americans might have little sense of him as they consider themselves atheists or doubters or religiously unaffiliated. The apparent and direct reality that the Jesus from scripture requests a form of extreme compassion concentrated on the impoverished is what has always made Christianity somewhat of a scandalous religion: appealing to the masses, but due to its natural unconventionality demanding to be controlled. During the 1950s it was controlled via weakening – Protestant Christianity was so widespread that it basically blessed current circumstances.
A Struggle for the Highest Within Us
So I have been encouraged to see the determined opposition against Trump emerge in this past year. It has provided significant comfort to help build the initiative that has demonstrated publicly through repeated demonstrations, and appears to have motivated electorate to participate in large quantities in the off-year elections. We must have to continue it, and in the same spirit, displaying national flags at every demonstration and requests to the highest qualities of American history.
