In a significant move ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The September uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding accusations of systemic political corruption.

Details of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Government Consultations Taking Place

In a related event, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with several leading political leaders. These talks included former prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the uprising.

Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
