Christantus Uche Fuels Comfortable Crystal Palace Win at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Despite entering their first-ever continental campaign, Crystal Palace are adapting at a rapid pace. Missing key figures like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the London club departed Dublin with a commanding win that all but secures them a place in the Conference League qualifying rounds.
Another three points in their upcoming match against Finnish KuPS ought to be enough to secure straight passage to the knockout stages, especially after a prior stumble against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Grasp the Opportunity
This match offered a chance for some of Palace's lesser-used players to shine. Christantus Uche, in only his second beginning since joining on loan from Getafe, opened the account with a well-taken goal. Forward Eddie Nketiah added a another, scoring for the second game in succession.
A Shelbourne side that had concluded their domestic season were no match against a largely second-string Palace outfit. The visitors were further weakened by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are out with knee problems.
Dominance Asserted from the Start
Despite heavy rain in Dublin, Palace quickly established dominance. A flowing move in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, allowed Nketiah to lay on Uche for a simple finish.
Youngster Adam Wharton went close soon after, fizzing a powerful effort over the bar. Nketiah then appealed for a penalty after racing into the box, but the official dismissed the appeals.
Ex-Arsenal man did not have wait long to get his goal, tapping home from close range after Uche's shot had struck the post.
The home side were hanging on for dear life. Defender Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to avoid a booking for two agricultural tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the crossbar with a header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Contest
The match was as good as over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past some weak challenges before calmly dispatching a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
Following the break, manager Oliver Glasner took the chance to withdraw several players like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse almost scoring his very first touch, but saw his effort blocked.
Esse was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one shot crash off each posts before being gathered on the line. Uche also missed a sitter of a chance, showing there is still scope for improvement in his game.
The only worry for Palace was a second-half knock to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This paved the way for 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to make his first-team debut, capping an otherwise perfect evening for the traveling side.
